Individual work

A personal project carried out in my free time over the course of two years, this Minecraft map is a reproduction of the world of the Flash game Mechquest, produced by Artix Entertainment.

This project was born from a desire to adapt a 2D environment into 3D in order to represent everything that would not be able to be perceived in 2D, such as hidden angles or connections between various rooms.
It therefore does not represent my skills as a Game Designer, but demonstrates my graphic qualities in the interpretation and transcription of environments.

Project display

  • The project is a recreation of the game Mechquest, created by Artix Entertainment. It is designed in my free time, and I am the only one working on this map.

  • The goal of this project is to recreate the game world, while giving it a realistic appearance. It does not aim to simply stop at a 1:1 reproduction, but rather seeks to reproduce the world of the original game, while filling in aspects that are not visited by the original game (such as interiors of certain buildings, or areas in camera blind spots)

Used tools

  • The map is produced entirely withMinecraft, using it as an environmental tool

  • The 3D modeling toolBlockbench was used as a tool to recreate some of the aliens or robots encountered in the game through a resource pack.

  • The 3D modeling toolBD Studio was then used to recreate some of the environmental elements too small to be recreated in Minecraft.

  • Photoshopwas used multiple times to extract and adapt certain 2D images into sprites to integrate through Map Items.

Motivations for creating the project

  • The project was born from two specific desires

  • The first is simply my fascination with the link between 2D and 3D. I have long had a fascination with 2D environments and wanted to take 2D environments in order to visualize them in 3D. Minecraft seemed like the best tool to do this.

  • The second is my love for the game itself. Artix Entertainment was my inspiration to enter the field of Game Design, and this is present in a lot of my own Game Design. Mechquest is one of their favorite games for me, however, it is now discontinued. So I wanted to show some love to this game and its fans by giving them a new way to enjoy this game's universe.

Creation process

  • The map is created in multiple steps.

  • For the creation of each location, screenshots of each of its elements (example: external appearance of a building & each internal room) are collected. They are then represented in a 3D concept in order to perceive how each element connects. A particularity of a 2D environment is that the camera will not always be at the same angle, and so one must consider how each room connects.

  • Each massive location (individual planet) is created in its own separate map before being copied to the central map using World Editing tools.
